Lending your phone and personal boundaries: Lockstead use cases

Lockstead is an option when you lend an unlocked iPhone or iPad and want selected apps to remain restricted. It uses Apple Screen Time authorization. One-app core protection is free; Guest Mode and multi-app management require VIP. These are illustrative workflows, not customer testimonials.

When a partner wants to check your phone

Your girlfriend, boyfriend or partner asks to use or look through your phone, and you want certain apps to stay private.

A practical workflow

Agree on what you are comfortable sharing. Before handing over the device, configure selected-app restrictions or VIP Guest Mode and test which apps can open. Keep control of your Lockstead authentication.

What this does not cover

Lockstead cannot guarantee protection if someone can change its settings or revoke the required authorization. It does not guarantee concealment of app existence, notifications, browser sessions or all traces of activity. A restriction is a technical boundary, not a substitute for agreement.

Let a child watch a video without opening your other apps

You want to hand over your phone for a short video session while keeping unrelated apps out of reach.

A practical workflow

With VIP Guest Mode, choose the video app you intend to make available. Configure the session and its end time, then check both an allowed app and an app you expect to be restricted before handing over the device.

What this does not cover

The permitted video app still exposes whatever is inside it, including its signed-in account and available content. Lockstead is not a child-content filter or a guarantee against purchases. Check those controls separately.

Lend your phone to a friend for maps or a specific task

A friend needs your phone for directions, but does not need access to your personal apps.

A practical workflow

Use selected-app protection for the supported app you want to restrict, or VIP Guest Mode when you want to define the apps available for the task. Test the actual app choices on your device before lending it.

What this does not cover

An app restriction is not a promise to hide notification previews or information visible elsewhere. Review lock-screen previews and other visible information separately. Do not describe this as a new biometric lock inside every app.

Share your iPad for a short reading or entertainment session

Someone needs temporary access to a few apps on your own iPad; you want to keep a consistent boundary around the others.

A practical workflow

Configure VIP Guest Mode for the apps needed, choose an end time, and verify the allowed and restricted apps. After the session ends, check that your intended protection is active again.

What this does not cover

This does not create a separate iPad user account, separate app data or a managed workplace kiosk. Content within permitted apps remains available. Screen Time authorization must remain valid.

Try protecting one app before paying

You want to evaluate app restrictions with one supported app before deciding whether you need broader controls.

A practical workflow

Start with the free one-app core protection. Grant Screen Time authorization, select an app, apply protection and try opening it. Then practice changing protection yourself before relying on it during a handoff.

What this does not cover

Guest Mode and multi-app management require VIP. Optional Face ID or Touch ID authenticates access to Lockstead itself; it does not add a separate biometric sign-in inside each protected app.

Questions before you choose

Can I lend my unlocked iPhone while restricting selected apps?

Lockstead is designed for that situation, using Screen Time restrictions. Configure it in advance and test the restrictions on your device. It does not make all data on an unlocked phone inaccessible.

Does Guest Mode make a separate guest account?

No. It controls which apps remain available during a session; it does not create separate app accounts or isolated data for the guest.

Do I need to register a Lockstead account?

No app account is required. Screen Time authorization is still needed; purchases and restoration use Apple's purchase system.

Will this remove private details from a photo or PDF I send?

No. App restrictions do not redact shared copies or encrypt exported files. Use a redaction workflow for outgoing content, or an encrypted vault for files stored privately.

Can I depend on it without trying the setup?

You should first test both allowed and restricted apps and check the session ending behavior. Availability depends on Screen Time authorization and the configuration on your device.
